What Are the Top 10 Most Addictive Apps?

Last year, the ten most addictive apps predominantly included gaming apps. However, during the previous 12 months, an increase in the number of people downloading and using social media and networking apps have surged.

Once unheard of, social media apps have become an integral part of an individual’s everyday life. At the touch of a button, app users can view and discover what other individuals are doing throughout their day, see what celebrities are eating and send instant messages to those that live on the other side of the world.

Below, we have provided a list of the top 10 most addictive apps based on download figures and usage.

Take Our App Addition Assessment

Are you wondering whether excessive use of your favourite app might be an addiction? Take the below assessment to find out.

WhatsApp

Leading the list of the top 10 most addictive apps is WhatsApp. A messaging app that enables users to text, call, video message and share voice messages in real-time, WhatsApp remains one of the world’s most-used social apps. DataReportal’s April 2026 global social media statistics report that 54.4% of online adults aged 16 and above used WhatsApp in the previous month, while Similarweb app-use data places WhatsApp second only to YouTube among social media apps. This level of frequent messaging, calling and group-chat use is one reason WhatsApp can become difficult for some people to put down.

Facebook

Facebook was created in 2004 and remains one of the world’s most-used social networking apps. In GWI’s Q4 2025 survey, reported by DataReportal, 56.3% of online adults aged 16 and above said they had used Facebook in the previous month, making it the most widely used social platform by self-declared monthly use. Facebook users can easily spend long periods scrolling feeds, watching videos and checking updates.

Facebook Messenger

Another instant messaging platform, Facebook Messenger was launched in 2011 to provide Facebook users with another way to communicate in real-time with friends and family.

While not as popular as WhatsApp, DataReportal reports that 36.9% of online adults aged 16 and above used Facebook Messenger at least once in the previous 30 days. Similarly to WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger also has desktop options for Windows and Mac users, making messaging and video messaging easier across devices.

Instagram

Instagram is still one of the largest image and video-led social platforms. DataReportal reports that 54.6% of online adults aged 16 and above used Instagram in the previous month, while the platform’s reported global ad reach is around 1.99 billion users. For many people, the combination of stories, reels, comments and direct messages can make checking updates a recurring habit.

Snapchat

Released in 2011 as a mobile-only app, Snapchat has provided individuals across the world with yet another way to share images, videos and messages in real-time.

Snapchat is now a mature platform with a large global audience. Snap’s Q1 2026 investor letter reported 483 million daily active users and 956 million monthly active users. The app’s streaks, stories, maps and short-lived messages can encourage frequent checking throughout the day.

Gmail

Gmail remains a widely used email app for both professional and personal communication. Because email can arrive at any time and notifications are often enabled by default, some users find themselves checking the app repeatedly throughout the day.

YouTube

Video content has recently become increasingly popular, with people of all ages turning to YouTube as a form of entertainment. With this in mind, it comes as no surprise that YouTube is classed as one of the most addictive apps.

From music videos to vlogs, YouTube’s mobile app has transformed how users watch and interact with video content. DataReportal’s 2026 social media analysis ranks YouTube first for active social media app use in Similarweb data, and reports that YouTube ads reach around 2.65 billion users each month.

TikTok

TikTok is no longer a relatively new phenomenon, but it still has a strong pull for short-form video users. DataReportal’s 2026 analysis places TikTok fifth for active social media app use in Similarweb data and reports global ad reach of around 2.21 billion users. Its endless-scroll format, recommendations and short videos can make it easy to keep watching for longer than intended.

Zoom

Another popular app, Zoom has enhanced the way that individuals can communicate with others by providing a virtual location for people to meet.

Employed for both professional and personal purposes, Zoom remains a widely used video-calling app for work, education, healthcare and personal communication. Its convenience can make back-to-back virtual meetings feel routine, especially for people who use it across both professional and social settings.

The Downside of Addictive Apps

Although social media and networking apps provide users with a wealth of benefits, overuse of apps can have negative repercussions. While many fail to realise it, internet addiction can arise from overusing applications. As users reach for their devices to read messages, scroll Instagram or view emails, it becomes increasingly difficult to limit the amount of time spent on the internet.

Social media apps can also have a detrimental impact on a user’s mental health. Various studies have concluded that social media can increase the risk of suffering from depression, anxiety and loneliness. Inaccurate representations of an individual’s life can additionally leave others feeling somewhat inadequate.
