Recognising The Signs of Anxiety
Anxiety is a mental health issue that can cause negative feelings such as panic, unease or worry. These feelings that come with anxiety are often very intense in the short term, but you may also feel low-level anxiety in the long term too.
Sometimes, anxiety can be triggered by a major life event or change, such as a change of home or job, coping with an illness, financial problems or relationship problems. However, some people suffer from generalised anxiety disorder where there might not be a particular cause.
There are a number of symptoms that can indicate you’re suffering from anxiety. You may suffer from panic attacks, where you’ll have a high heart rate and difficulty breathing, although not everyone with anxiety has these attacks. You may have a persistent feeling of doom and worry, feeling like something bad is going to happen, which can lead to anger and irritability.
You can also suffer from physical symptoms such as shaking, sweating and tightness in your chest. If you’re worried about any of these symptoms, you might want to seek immediate medical advice.
The symptoms of anxiety can really vary from person to person, and in some cases, they go hand in hand with other mental health issues such as depression.
Some people with anxiety and panic disorders will try to self-medicate with alcohol or drugs, leading to addiction which in turn means that the problem can be viewed as a co-occurring disorder.
Co-occurring disorder otherwise known as dual diagnosis is used to describe an individual who is suffering from both a mental condition such as anxiety and substance abuse disorder such as drug addiction.
Both of these problems may have been completely developed together but evidence suggests that treatment of one of these conditions i.e. anxiety or drug addiction or vice versa will, in turn, have a positive effect on reducing the symptoms associated with the other.
Whatever the type of anxiety disorder you are suffering from our expert team is here to ensure that you get the help you need to deal with your issues, and your anxiety treatment will be tailored to your needs.
The Causes of Anxiety
There are many things that can cause anxiety, and it’s thought to affect about 6% of the population.
Women are more likely to be diagnoses with anxiety, although this may be because men feel there’s a lot of stigma attached to seeking psychological treatments for mental conditions such as depression and anxiety.
Anxiety can be genetic, and you’re more likely to suffer from it if you have a parent or sibling with the condition.
It can also be caused by trauma, growing up with instability, or environmental factors such as bereavement, financial problems, housing issues or unemployment.
People who grow up in an unstable environment may find it harder to manage stress in later life.

The first thing most people try when diagnosed with anxiety is medication. This can be in the form of beta blockers, or a Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (SSRI), depending on many different factors.
For some people with mild anxiety, or those who just need a bit of help during a stressful time, this can sometimes be enough to treat their condition but for those suffering more severely from anxiety, the effects of this is likely to be insufficient.
We do not believe medication is the answer to treating anxiety, as holistic based practices have shown to have far more effect in the long term recovery of anxiety than more short term solutions such as medication.
Therapies sessions have been shown to be very effective in anxiety treatment, especially when combined with the right support.
This can include one to one counselling and group therapy sessions, group therapy may be very daunting for anxiety suffers at first but can be very effective in conditioning the mind to deal with situations that heighten the symptoms.
Along with the above, we also offer therapies and treatments for anxiety such as:
- Biofeedback Stress Reduction
- Satori Chair Therapy
- Intravenous Brain Restoration (NAD+)
- Art Therapy
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
These treatments and therapies have proven to help reduce the risks of Anxiety with therapies such as CBT aiming to help you identify the root causes of your anxiety and give you tools you need to overcome your negative feelings.
When you start to feel worried, you can use the methods learnt in therapies such as CBT to help break negative thought patterns. CBT has helped many people cope with anxiety in the long term.
If it doesn’t work for you, then the other psychological therapies mentioned above may be more suitable for your anxiety, so we’ll discuss different options with you.
Many individuals find that just having an excuse to spend extended time away from home and fully focusing on recovery can have a big impact on treating their anxiety.
This is due to being able to remove all the stresses of everyday life such as work or studies, we also take care of day to day things from your meals to laundry, giving you plenty of time to undertake anxiety treatment.
